Facilitators and volunteers call-out for the Media Democracy Conference Ottawa!!

Members of the Ottawa Working Group of the Media Co-op, in conjunction with Organizing For Justice, are holding the Media Democracy Conference on November 16-18, at the University of Ottawa.

This is a key part of the process to start the Ottawa Media Co-op and generate energy, awareness and capacity for this project, as well as to create connections with people interested in alternative media in and around Ottawa.

We are looking for speakers and workshop facilitators for the programming during the conference. If you have suggestions for workshop topics or speakers, or would like to facilitate a session yourself, please fill out this form:  by  October 17th, or as soon after as possible.

This conference is intended for media makers, activists and others who are interested in learning more about alternative media and developing some reporting skills. It will  address different issues with the media as well as providing training for media making.

The format of the conference is a Friday evening of keynote speakers and presentations, a full-day Saturday with issue- and skills-based sessions (panel discussions and workshops), and a Sunday afternoon meeting specifically for those interested in being involved with the Media Co-op.

Les membres du groupe d’action de la Coop Média d’Ottawa en partenariat avec l’organisme Organisons-nous pour la Justice, proposent une conférence portant sur le journalisme citoyen les 16, 17 et 18 novembre prochains à l’Université d’Ottawa.

Cette conférence annoncera l’ouverture la première Coop Média d’Ottawa. L’objectif étant de sensibiliser et de mobiliser le public, mais aussi de tisser des liens avec des personnes intéressées à participer à ce projet de médias alternatifs en Outaouais

Nous recherchons des conférenciers et des bénévoles pour animer des ateliers tout au long de la Conférence. Pour toute question concernant les sujets des ateliers,  le profil des conférenciers ou pour t’impliquer et animer des débats, merci de remplir ce formulaire et ce avant le 17 octobre prochain ou a plus près au possible.

Cette conférence s’adresse aux journalistes de tous bords, aux activistes et à tous ceux qui souhaitent en savoir plus sur les médias alternatifs et développer leurs compétences journalistiques.

Concernant le programme de la Conférence, le vendredi soir sera marqué par les discours et présentations d’invités d’honneur, samedi sera une journée dédiée au développement de compétences journalistiques et enfin la rencontre de dimanche après-midi permettra aux personnes intéressées d’en apprendre davantage sur les façons de s’impliquer au sein de la Coop Média.

We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting a conference on Media Democracy in Ottawa on Nov 16-18, in partnership with the Ottawa Working Group of the Media Co-op.   Please help us promote the conference:

This conference is intended for media makers, activists and others who are interested in learning more about alternative media and developing some reporting skills. It will address different issues with the media as well as providing training for media making. The conference is free or by donation. No advance registration is required. Children are welcome (read our philosophy on kids).   More about the conference:

  • Connect: with like-minded people; with media makers; with ideas and inspiration
  • Cultivate: an apply-able understanding of principles of media literacy (incl. media making)
  • Create: improve media-making skills and perspectives; a network of media makers/activists; a media coop organization in Ottawa
  • Conspire: to come up with plans to have more effective, healthy community media
  • Launch of Media Coop idea in Ottawa: people are aware, able to use, become members

VIDEO: Lost in Colonization

Lost in Colonization: Al kaffiyeh l’3arabiyeh, The Israeli Keffiyeh, The Hippest of the Hipsters and The Politicized Queer.

Presented at the November 2010 Organizing For Justice

Directed workshop with visual art, video, and discussion.

This workshop aims to address the recent ‘kuffiyah’ fashion trend, especially among queer or activist circles. It raises the issue of how this scarf has been rid of its political significance by the clothing industry and the Israeli government, and facilitates education about the kuffiyah and its history as well as the broader goal of reflecting on solidarity and elaborating strategies to be better ‘allies’.

Presenter: Ghaida Moussa, Masters Student at the University of Ottawa (thesis on the resistance of Palestinian Queer Womyn) and active member of Agitate! Queer People of Colour
